Our senior hurlers were beaten by Kilruane MacDonaghs by 1-21 to 0-23 after extra time in Round 2A of the County Challenge Cup under the lights in Borrisoleigh on Wednesday night. Kilruane started against the strong wind and were boosted by an early goal, as Moneygall struggled to make wind advantage count in the opening 20 minutes. Moneygall edged in front with the last three scores of the half from Phil Fanning and Padhraic Greene (2), to lead 0-8 to 1-3 at the break, but were dealt a blow with the loss of Paddy Fanning to a second yellow card just before half time.
The second half was end to end stuff with the teams trading scores, and at the end of sixty minutes the sides were level, 1-15 to 0-18. Moneygall were restored to 15 men for extra time, and scored two points to Kilruane’s one in the opening period to take a slender lead into the last ten minutes. Ger Kirwan soon doubled the lead but Kilruane responded and outscored Moneygall by five points to two from then to the finish, with Justin Cahill hitting the winning score in the last minute.
This result means Moneygall will now enter the Jim Devitt Cup, where we will play Kildangan in the quarter finals in St Flannan's Park this weekend.
