U21 Footballers Lose County Semi-Final

Clonakenny/Moneygall were beaten by Borrisokane by 2-8 to 0-8 in the county U21 B football semi-final in Templemore on Friday evening.

Heavy showers beforehand made for very tricky conditions, but both teams played some good football and took some nice scores.  Clonakenny/Moneygall had led by 0-6 to 0-4 after a hard-fought first half, but after the restart the sides were soon level at 0-6 each.  The game then swung in Borrisokane’s favour in a ten minute spell midway through the half.  Two red cards reduced Clonakenny/Moneygall to thirteen men, and in between a goal had opened up a 1-7 to 0-6 lead for Borrisokane.

Their lead was 1-8 to 0-6 with five minutes left, but despite the numerical disadvantage Clonakenny/Moneygall finished strongly.  Two pointed frees reduced the gap to a goal, before a fine save from the Borrisokane goalkeeper in the last minute prevented an equaliser.  The resulting 45 was cleared, and with the majority of the players having gone upfield for the 45, Borrisokane quickly counter-attacked for a second goal to seal their place in the county final.
